I absolutely love this, even though it's the lid of a sarcophagus. I don't know if I would want my gravestone that magnificent. I love the way it's cut, I almost wanna touch it. The way that it's carved, you can see the texture, and the fine lines in the wrinkles of the sheets. But the romantic aspect is captured in the book, and I couldn't have said it better: "this loving pair has been caught for eternity in a tender embrace..."

I love that it shows a society that places a value on personal relationships.
ReplyDeleteI couldn't agree with you more. I mean, we express ourselves like this now, through paintings and and pictures of ourselves. You see thousands of pictures of couples, but nothing even compares to this, and it never will. That's like taking a digital photograph, and etching it in time. So now, forever, these two are embracing. It's perfectly breathtaking.
ReplyDeleteI think it's really sweet that the couple was carved into their own sarcophagus. It shows that they really loved each other.
ReplyDeleteI love how it looks like they are in a bed; you can see what looks like pillows and the very detailed sheets. When I first looked at the sheets, they kind of looked like they had cob webs or spider webs on them, so I was a little disgusted at first, but I then realized that the sheets are just so fine and detailed.
I would not want this on my coffin either but I do think that it is kind of cute that they showed that the couple had a romantic side and not a "whatever you're the girl you're not supposed to be seen or be involved and you're the guy so you're supposed to be all manly". It blew me away when I saw that the sculptures started to change their styles a little bit more.
